In this blog, you’ll discover multiple ways to add a video to PowerPoint.

In older versions of PowerPoint (2007 or earlier), the methods for adding a video to PowerPoint were troublesome.

If you wanted to add an external video, you had to save the file in the same directory as your presentation.

Then, you were required to “attach” to an object within PowerPoint via a hyperlink inside a slide, forcing it to read the file from a specific directory location.

If you were to change the directory without also changing the links within your presentation, PowerPoint would no longer load the video.

Things have changed for the better in recent versions of Microsoft Office (available from 2010 or newer). The ways of adding a video to PowerPoint have improved.

You can now embed a video into your PowerPoint presentation. It means you do not need to manage the file location. Here’s how you can do it.

Ways to add a video to PowerPoint

Embed online video in PowerPoint

There are several online video options supported in the last version of PowerPoint.

However, YouTube is the only video streaming site supported in PowerPoint versions 2010, 2013, and 2016, as well as newer versions of the program.

Before this point, YouTube videos were added with a hyperlink linking to the YouTube video. Users could merely click on the link to play the video. However, the video plays on your presentation in newer versions without transitioning to a new page.

They allow you to use the built-in player to choose how you want your video to load. You can choose when you want it to start playing or not, and whether your video will repeat automatically or not. You can also choose the type of monitor resolution that is best for presenting your media and whether the image occupies the whole screen.
