Is Skillshare Better than Udemy? (2023 edition)

You’ve heard of these two platforms in the world of online courses, but is Skillshare better than Udemy? Let’s find out.

Skillshare vs Udemy: The judgement criteria

  • check mark

    Can you build YOUR brand?

Although Skillshare has over 20,000 courses to choose from, every single one follows a certain template. Course creators are required to upload pre-recorded lectures (ranging from 20-60 minutes). These videos are further cut down into bite-sized snippets with a duration of 2-5 minutes each. You’re also expected to provide your students with assignments to add a practical element to their learning journey.

If you want to experiment with your courses, you’ll find Udemy a little more liberal with its policies. The platform doesn’t have strict guidelines to follow regarding the course structure. You can create a plethora of elements to keep your students engaged. These can include trivia, Q&As, brainstorming sessions and mind maps. You can also send personalized welcome messages to your students with a quick introduction of yourself and the course they’ve opted for.

    How do you make $$$?

If you build your course on Skillshare, you’ll need to wait until you have 25 students enrolled in your course before you can make money. Each student will bring you a revenue of roughly $1-2. To host your course on the website, Skillshare asks for a subscription fee. It uses an algorithm to automatically distribute total revenue among creators with the most-watched videos of the month. Once you get traction on the platform, your profits build up considerably.

Udemy takes a slightly different approach with monetization. You don’t need to pay a subscription fee to create and host a course. You’ll get paid according to how many people are attending your course. If your students find your course through Udemy’s website or organic Google search, you’ll only get 37% of the revenue generated. However, if someone buys a course directly through an affiliate link, the platform gives you a 50% profit cut.

Does the mobile experience match up?

Skillshare’s mobile app can be accessed through both iOS and Android devices. Your students will be able to watch your course and download it for offline viewing. Their progress is automatically synced with the application, which makes it very user-friendly. There isn’t a lot of scope for communicating with your students, though. This makes it very difficult to build a brand or community.

Udemy also provides a mobile app to both iOS and Android users. If they have Chromecast or Apple TV, the platform will allow them to stream your course with the Udemy app. Similar to Skillshare, you won’t get much opportunity to interact with students, apart from an inbox that allows you to see their course reviews.

With Graphy Community, you get...

The difference is in our DNA

We're content creators, teachers AND community builders.

And, we know how everything ties together to make a business.

We've been teaching online since 2018. We ran one of the world's largest educational communities from 2019-2021 and scaled to $500,000 revenue by selling cohort-based courses. We kept hopping from one software to another because the experience of actually using all available software is bad.

This led us to build Graphy Community Platform - an all-in-one platform to run your courses, cohorts, webinars, events, voice chat rooms, etc. - on mobile & web (100% white-labeled).

Your branded online community on any device.
